Refosco dal peduncolo rosso, italian red wine

Yesterday night we drunk an italian red wine produced in a region at the North-East of Italy, Friuli Venezia Giulia. It is not so far from Venice and it is a little region with many interesting products, prosciutto crudo San Daniele (ham) for example. Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, produced by Santa Margherita, is one of the most important wines in that region. Other wines are pinot, chardonnay, tocai. The name is a little strange but the grape is Refosco. In botany the peduncle is a stem, red in this case. The wine is not so strong, berry fruits is its main flavour.

Champagne for Illy’s birthday

Last September 12th was Illy’s birthday and we had a dinner with her parents at home. For the event we drank a Champagne Vieille Reserve that we bought in Champagne region during our holiday in France. This wine is produced by Godart et Fils, a little producer in Moussy, just 10 minutes from Epernay. We found that this wine is very good, genuine and handmade. We appreciate these characteristics when we drink this kind of wines because a little producer is able to transmit the passion of his work.
Very different from Franciacorta wine and Italian sparkling white wines in general, this champagne has a yellow colour, a fine perlage and a very good taste.
Genuine and authentic is the label too, but in the context it fits perfectly…..

Same method, different territory

Before our trip in France, the last sparkling wine we drunk was a Franciacorta wine. We already tasted champagne but our visit in that region was fundamental for us to understand how the champagne is vinified, bottled and so on. As Illy explains in the post about our visit in the Champagne region, we visited 2 different kind of producers. In the morning a small producer in Moussy and in the afternoon Veuve Clicqout. Both champagnes were very good and my first thought was: this method is applied in Franciacorta too, and the grapes are more or less the same, but the territory and the climate are very different. I think this is the main plus that France has in comparison to other countries. Of course the Champagne method was created in that region and for its specific environment. All others are copies.

Barone Pizzini, a Franciacorta wine for my birthday

Last Saturday, August 9th, my parents and my sister went here for dinner to celebrate my birthday. Illy prepared a nice dinner based on octopus, sea bream and fresh salad from the back garden. All accompanied by a Franciacorta wine Barone Pizzini Brut. It was already the second time that I tasted this wine and I appreciated it.

Franciacorta Wine Barone Pizzini

The smell of this Franciacorta was elegant, mellow and the taste had notes of flowers and ripe fruit but the main impression was on the palate, it was creamy and persistent like any good wine.

Over again we confirmed our opinion that the sparkling wine of this region is excellent.
